Anmeldung: Register Your Address in Germany

Once you arrive in Germany and settle into your accommodation, one of the first administrative tasks you should look into is your Anmeldung (city registration). In general, you must register your new address within two weeks of moving in, so it is best to arrange this as early as possible.

The registration office you need to contact depends on where you live. It may be called the Bürgeramt, Bürgerbüro, Rathaus, or Einwohnermeldeamt, depending on the city or municipality. Larger cities often allow you to book appointments online, while smaller towns may offer different booking options.

Documents You Need for Anmeldung

Before attending your appointment, make sure you have the following documents ready:

  • Passport or valid identification: Bring your original identification document.
  • Anmeldeformular: The address registration form, if required by your local office.
  • Wohnungsgeberbestätigung: A confirmation of residence completed and signed by your landlord or accommodation provider.
  • Appointment confirmation: If you booked an appointment, keep the confirmation email or booking details handy.
  • Rental agreement (Mietvertrag): Keep a copy with you as a supporting document, even though it does not replace the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung.

Requirements can vary by municipality, so check the official website of your local registration office before your appointment.

Anmeldeformular vs Wohnungsgeberbestätigung

These are two different documents, and it is easy to mix them up:

  • Anmeldeformular: the registration form you submit to the registration office.
  • Wohnungsgeberbestätigung: a confirmation completed and signed by your landlord or accommodation provider, stating that you have moved into the property.

My Experience: Registering with an Airbnb Address

When I first arrived in Germany, I booked an Airbnb for my first month. Since finding long-term accommodation can be challenging, I wanted to complete my registration as early as possible.

I asked my Airbnb host to provide a signed rental agreement and the necessary confirmation of residence so I could proceed with my Anmeldung.

The document I needed from my host was most likely the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung. This is different from the Anmeldeformular, which is the registration form submitted to the authorities. The landlord or accommodation provider completes and signs the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung to confirm your move-in date and address.

Finding long-term accommodation in Germany can take several months, depending on the city and your circumstances. In my case, securing permanent housing was a challenge, so I recommend planning your temporary accommodation carefully and asking your host in advance whether they can provide the documents required for registration. If you are still searching, my guide on renting an apartment in Germany covers where to look and what landlords ask for.

Important tip: Not every short-term accommodation arrangement automatically qualifies for registration. Confirm with your local registration office whether your particular accommodation and length of stay qualify before relying on an Airbnb address.

Anmeldung Checklist

Use this checklist to prepare for your registration appointment:

  • Find the registration office responsible for your address.
  • Check the official website for appointment availability and local requirements.
  • Book your appointment, if required.
  • Prepare your passport or other accepted identification.
  • Complete the Anmeldeformular, if required.
  • Ask your landlord or host for a signed Wohnungsgeberbestätigung.
  • Keep your rental agreement and appointment confirmation handy.
  • Attend your appointment or complete the approved online process.
  • Keep your Anmeldebestätigung (registration confirmation) safe after registration.

Your Anmeldebestätigung is an important document that you may need for other administrative tasks in Germany, so keep it somewhere accessible. A registered address is also what you will use for things like a German SIM card.
