Disclaimer: A planning aid, not financial advice. Rates, tax treatment and TDS thresholds vary between banks, change over time, and depend on your residency. Verify with your bank or a qualified advisor.
The gap between the advertised rate and what actually reaches you is tax — and on a deposit it is charged every year the interest accrues, not only when the deposit matures.

This is an estimate, not advice. Banks vary slightly in how they round and compound, and
premature withdrawal usually reduces the effective rate and may attract a penalty — neither is
modelled here. Confirm the exact terms with your bank, and your tax position with a chartered accountant.
Interest is taxed as it accrues. Unlike a mutual fund, where tax falls due only when you
redeem, deposit interest is taxable in the year it is credited or accrues, at your slab rate under
"income from other sources" — even on a cumulative deposit where you have not received a rupee yet.
TDS is only an advance collection against that liability, not the liability itself.
If you are an NRI: this estimates Indian tax only. Your country of residence may also tax this
interest as worldwide income, and India's tax treaties reduce the double burden differently for each
country. NRE and FCNR interest being exempt in India does not mean it is exempt where you live.

What this adds over a generic FD calculator
- NRO vs NRE, side by side — the same deposit under both account types. This is the comparison that matters for an NRI, and the reason this exists rather than a generic calculator.
- Tax as it accrues — interest is taxed at your slab rate in the year it accrues, with none of the long-term or short-term distinction that applies to mutual funds. TDS is an advance collection, kept separate from the liability.
